Late last year, my friend Cole (@colecifer_xxviii) reached out about bashing up a mech for him to cast in pewter. He finished casting it a little over a month ago, so I wanted to write down my process for bashing this guy up here.
Cole's mech started off with a cockpit I took from an old metal model and some robot legs from Ramshackle Games. I would love to know what the metal model was from (I'm assuming battletech??), but could not find anything about it on my own. The torso of the model has a great shape and bulk to it, so I think it fit well as the core anchor for Cole's mech.
Cole's request for how the mech should be built was my favorite part of the project: he wanted it built to the specifications of his mercenary character in Flames of Orion. Building to a specific loadout is my favorite approach to kitbashing mechs.
The mortar and missile systems were what stuck out to me most in the mech's stats, and I wanted them to be the main focus of the build. A smaller mech with two giant missile pods felt like the right move.
The round silo on one side made from a test tube cap got some flower beads as a payload, and the square silo made from a plastic game piece got some drilled toothpicks. With that the basic outline of the mech was pretty much done, and all I had to do was greeble some of the empty/flat spaces.
Some guitar wire, and a resin drum magazine bit filled out the back of the mech nicely. For the pods, I wanted to see how finely I could greeble while still being visible after molding and casting. The square pod got some flat, metal watch parts bent around it as paneling, and the round pod got exposed electrical wires running along the surface. I can't say for sure, since I don't have the actual cast in my hands yet, but it looks like, from the pictures I've seen, that the details were capture very well by Cole!
Once again I would like to thank Cole for trusting me with this project. Cole's Cult of the Possessed warband was the first thing I ever came across related to miniature wargaming back in 2023, and without seeing those models I would not be so wired on bashing little toy soldiers. KYxOH forever.
